Hotel Rufino is a real find. Located at the "top" of Assisi, 200 yards from the beautiful San Rufino Cathedral, it is a short walk downhill to the central square - Piazza Comune, with the astounding 1st century (!) Roman Temple of Minerva, as well as many cafes and restaurants. The walk to the great San Francisco Basilica is all downhill, through the marvelous narrow and picturesque streets of Assisi. Hauling oneself all the way back up takes some doing, but makes you feel justified in eating a lovely big meal in one of the terrific restaurants (to keep up your strengh!) I would rather be at the top of the town rather than near the Basilica, with its hordes of tourists. The hotel is a wonderful little gem. We stayed in Room 9 in the Annex. It is a terrific room, with a high beamed ceiling and a fireplace, a brand-new bathroom with modern fittings, very comfortable bed, etc. Laura, at the front desk, was extremely helpful. Our friend had Room 4, which is smaller, but off a tiny little courtyard - very cute. The maze of alleys around the hotel is delightful, and if you just walk up the stairway past the Annex, you finally reach the fabulous Fortezza, which looms over the entire city. This hotel is in a very old, historic building, and gives you the sense of what it might be like to live in Assisi. Very cool!
There are no bad points that we could find. However, driving to the hotel might be perplexing if you don't have an Assisi map with you. Fortunately we did, and it was clear that once we were just below the city walls, we needed to keep driving to the right, winding upwards along the walls, always heading to Piazza Matteotti and the San Rufino Cathedral. Once you get near the Piazza, you'll see signs for Hotel San Rufino. Follow them and you'll find yourself in the square in front of the Cathedral. Park there momentarily, and walk up the 100 or so feet to the hotel on Via Perlici. But after unloading and checking in, ask for your discount parking ticket and then drive all the way up to Piazza Matteotti again, and park for only 10 Euros per night. Walking back to the hotel takes about 5 minutes. If you can, print out a map of Assisi from online sources before you go. Then you'll understand how to drive up there. That is just about the only thing that might be a problem with this wonderful place, so study the map and you'll see where you must go.
The large room and the bed
The night employee was very misseducated
We liked the location.
The bed mattress needs to be replaced and the towels are more like paper towels.
I have to say that it is a very nice place with very beautiful small building, very clean, interesting structure and also located in the centre of ancient city.
the old style furniture are really "old", but no matter for short stay.
really big room, exquisite decoration, spotless clean, feal like home!!! i would definately recomand it, or visit it again!!
noy in the center, 20 min walk
